Newham youngsters fight for points as shortstaffed team starts a new season

Newham & Essex Beagles had to fight for every point at their first UK Athletics Youth Development League meeting of the season at Lewes on Saturday.

Syris Vige was second in the under-15 boys’ B string 100m in 12.0secs and won the B 200m in 24.9.

Aaron Ashmead-Shoye (13.1) was fifth in the A 100m, while Damope Akinyemi (25.3) was fourth in the 200m.

Emmanuel Abbas finished third in the 800m, with Kian Whitby fourth in the B string race, while Akinyemi won the 80m hurdles in 12.6 and long jump wth 5.75m.

Ashmead-Shoye won the B long jump with 5.63 and the A high jump with a clearance of 1.62, as Louis Willson (1.30) took third in the B string competition.

Willson also went over 1.70m in the pole vault for second place, as Whitby turned his hand to shot put (3.25) for fifth and discus (5.55) for sixth-place points.

Abass was sixth in the hammer with 9.93, while Vige was sixth in the javelin with 13.13, as Omer Mubarik finished second in the B string with 11.83.

Beagles won the 4x100m relay in 48.4 secs thanks to Abass, Vige, Akinyemi and Ashmead-Shoye, but Whitby, Willson, Abass and Mubarik were fifth in the 4x300m.

Sariya Shoyelu-Armstrong (12.7) and Faith Ezelue (13.3) won a 100m double for the under-15 girls, with Shoyelu-Armstrong second in the 200m in 27.6, as Anaya Francis (29.8) took third in the B string race.

Nia Amaning (44.3) was second in the 300m, as Tamara Greatrex (46.5) fourth in the B race, as Olivia Tinubu and Lauren Brown ran the 800m.

Francis (18.3) and Ayokusibe Adewale-Badero (16.1) took on the 75m hurdles, while Chinazo Machie (4.32) was third in the long jump as Serena Hogan (3.28) competed in the B string.

Ernesta Amoah (1.35) was third in the high jump, while Precious Omaka (7.36) was fourth in the shot and Machie (5.89) won the B.

Omaka (16.71) and Machie (14.52) were third in the discus, with Amoah (11.84) and Hogan (8.16) in hammer action as Adewale-Badero (13.21) and Browne (11.30) competed in the javelin.

Machie, Amoah, Ezelue and Shoyelu-Armstrong were second in the 4x100m relay in 53.6, while Tinubu, Browne, Francis and Amaning finished fifth in the 4x300m event.

For the under-13 boys, there was a 100m win for Ossari Acquah (12.3) and success over 200m in 25.4, as Christopher Thompson (14.0) and Solomon Mensah (29.1) took second in the B strings.

Noah Hanson and Funbi Osunsami ran the 300m, while Nathaniel Hanson (5.12.3) and Jonmark Nwosa (5.32.6) were fourth and third in the 1500m.

Thompson (14.7) took second in the 75m hurdles, with Noah Hanson (14.2) winning the B string, and Acquah came out on top in the long jump with 4.94, as Noah Hanson (4.41) won another B string.

Nathaniel Hanson added high jump success with a clearance of 1.45m, as Nwosa cleared 1.15 in the B string, and Thompson (5.48) and Osunsami (3.51) were fourth in the shot.

Throwing the javelin were Nathaniel Hanson (7.77) and Nwosa (6.12), while Mensah, Thompson, Noah Hanson and Acquah won the 4x100m relay in 54.2.

Karis Wilson won the girls’ 75m in 10.6 and 150m in 20.9, as Chenoa Acquah (11.5) and Chloe Gormley (23.2) were fourth and third in the B strings.

Gormley (3.58) and Wilson (3.53) also competed in the long jump, as Acquah (3.62) took sixth in the shot and was fourth in the B javelin (57.2), with Gormley (11.19) fifth in the A string.

But Beagles were left to count the cost of various unfilled spots on the day as they finished fifth out of six teams.

Result: Brighton & Hove AC 595, Medway & Maidstone 459.5; Basildon 431; Lewes 426.5; Newham & Essex Beagles 399; Bexley 374.

*Newham & Essex Beagles’ upper-age youngsters compete in their first league match at Havering on Sunday.

The under-17 and under-20 athletes, who join forces with Basildon AC to form a composite team, are competing in South Division 1B against Croydon Harriers, Havering, Stevenage & North Herts and Tonbridge.

Their other meetings this season are at Stevenage (May 27), Croydon (July 1) and the Julie Rose Stadium (July 29).

The club are also hosting their 100m Sprint Open at the Terence McMillan Stadium on Sunday May 6, where electronic blocks, photo finish and a results screen will be in use.

The action gets underway at 12pm for women and 1pm for men and anyone interested in taking part can enter online for £10 at entry4sports.co.uk – or £12 from Monday April 30 – or pay £15 cash on the day.
