The best thing about running in Newham is the community – and the brunch afterwards – according to local office worker Stella Boamah.
The Newham mum of four wants to make her local running community even bigger, and is urging families and other would-be runners to get active together and join her and her grown-up daughters to take on the Great Newham London Run 10km on July 2
Having lived in the borough for over 30 years and been running for six, Stella experiences first-hand the legacy left behind from the London 2012 Games and the impact it has had on the community in increasing sports participation and running groups.
“Running has brought all of us together,” she said. “Since the Olympic Games I’ve felt a great sense of community in Newham. The running activities on offer in the borough such as the Great Run Local sessions on Sundays have brought people from a wide range of backgrounds and fitness levels together.”
With daughters aged 29, 27 and 23-year-old twins, Boamah started running in 2011following a diabetes diagnosis to help with weight loss and arthritis on GP’s orders, and claims that keeping fit has helped reduce her pain by 70 per cent.
“Running has improved my overall happiness and health, and it has helped to alleviate the symptoms of depression,” she added.
“I make sure that I run in all seasons, especially during winter to beat the winter blues.”
After giving birth to her twins the weight piled on for almost 10 years and it wasn’t until Stella found the Newham running community that she was able to get back to good health.
“Running is free and I have a great support network who motivate me to get up and run,” she said.
“Surrounding yourself with people who hold you accountable who also support and motivate you is essential!
“The Great Newham London Run 10km and 2km Family Run takes place at the London Stadium on July 2, and is the only event in the Olympic Park to finish inside the stadium on the athletics track.
Stella and her daughters have taken part in every Great Newham London Run since its beginning in 2013, training together every weekend as a family to prepare for the big day.
“It’s very important for me to set a good example,” she added. “I’m always talking to my daughters about how exercise has helped me mentally and physically.
“It’s important for parents to practice what they preach and set a good routine for them to follow.”
More than 15,000 runners will take to the track on July 2 for either the full 10km event or the 2km Family Run event which sees children from the age of five crossing the iconic finish line hand-in-hand with their parents.
“I love the atmosphere at the run, the feeling I get when I reach the final stages of the course is really exciting,” added Boamah.
“Entering the Olympic Stadium with a big crowd cheering you on is amazing and I love that it really brings my family together. I especially like starting the run with the pink band along with other Newham residents for a real sense of togetherness.”
