World Champion Mo Farah has been named ‘Athlete of the Year’ by the British Athletics Writers’ Association for the second year in succession.

The Newham & Essex Beagles runner was the unanimous pick after a triumphant season, which culminated in winning the World 5,000 metres crown in South Korea.

Accepting the newly-named John Rodda Award from his training base in Portland, Oregon, Farah said: “I would like to thank all the writers who followed my journey, not only in 2011, but for the past 10 years.

“Thank you to those who voted for me and I’m happy to have given you some good stories to write this year. I am fortunate to have a great team behind me and I thank them for their help.

“As we plan for 2012 I hope to continue running well in what promises to be a very exciting year for sport in the UK.

“I know my fellow athletes are also training extremely hard and I urge all the media to get behind us as we try our best to run, jump and throw well in London next summer.”
