One week to go until July 2 event in Olympic Park

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales is looking forward to running in the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run at the Queen Elizabeth Park next weekend.

Thousands of runners from Newham and across the country will take part in the 10km and 2km Family Run on Sunday week (July 2), both of which will take in the park before finishing in the iconic London Stadium.

Former European 10,000m champion and five-time Olympian Jo Pavey will join Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, in starting the 10km run.

Newham residents were given the chance to take part in the event for free with Sir Robin securing 1,000 free tickets for the 10km run and 250 places available for families wanting to take part in the 2.3km.

Sir Robin will once again be joining those taking part in the event, organised by the Great Run Company in partnership with Newham Council, which is in its eight year.

Speaking ahead of the race, he said: “I am proud that one of the key events in the running calendar is taking place here in Newham.

“I am delighted so many local residents will have the chance of joining people from across the country to make their own lasting memories in the stadium that generated so many memorable moments during the 2012 Games.

“What better incentive could there be for people to take part in the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run than the opportunity to finish in the stadium where Olympians and Paralympians have won gold and where world champions will be crowned.

“As well as getting people out and active, the run is a wonderful way of bringing communities together. While Mo Farah and Usain Bolt will grab the headlines later in the summer at the IAAF World Championships, for me the real stars of the stadium this summer will be those competing this weekend.

“I am looking forward to joining everyone on the day and I wish everyone taking part the best of luck.”
