London 2017: Farah into 5,000m final

PUBLISHED: 07:58 10 August 2017

Newham & Essex Beagles star eases through heat

Sir Mo Farah made it through to the 5,000 metres final at the World Championships at a soggy London Stadium to keep his hopes of an 11th global title alive.

The four-time Olympic champion, having won 10,000m gold on the first day of these championships, finished second in his heat to secure a spot in Saturday’s medal race.

The 34-year-old crossed in 13 minutes 30.18 seconds behind Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha and said: “I’m a bit tired but you have just got to recover. It is always tough after the 10,000m heats, so I’m just happy to qualify.

“It is difficult to pick yourself back up and go out there to race so soon. I had to switch off and go again. Rounds are the hardest part.”

Having won the 5,000m title at the last three World Championships, Newham & Essex Beagles Farah will look to complete his fifth long-distance double in major competitions at the weekend.

He added: “Anything is possible – train hard and win easy, that is what the Kenyans say. I’ve been given a chance in life. For all the young kids out there, you should believe that you can do it as well.

“My knee is fine. It is just my body’s a bit tired. I went home to ee the family for a night.

“It ain’t easy. You have seen that with Usain Bolt. It would have been nice to see him win but it doesn’t just happen. Noone is going to give it to you, no matter who you are.

“It would be pretty amazing and something historic. It would mean the world to me but you can’t take anything for granted. They are coming for me and they are hungry.

“You could see that in the heats, they want to prove a point. I’m going to do it, even if I am not ready I’m going to do it. I just need to recover now.”
