Former European indoor high jump champion has been looking ahead to this weekend’s event in Birmingham
Former European indoor high jump champion Dalton Grant believes current star Morgan Lake could be the one to watch at this weekend’s British Indoor Championships.
The British Indoor Championships take place at Arena Birmingham from February 9-10 and double as the British trials for the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow next month.
A host of British stars will be in action as they look to book their place for the Europeans in Glasgow.
And Hackney lad Grant is confident that current high jump hero Lake will maintain her fine start to the indoor season with success at the British Championships this weekend.
“Morgan is looking in top form having equalled the British indoor record last month,” said the former Woodford Green & Essex Ladies athlete who won his European gold in Paris in 1994.
“Morgan is looking in top form and will be hoping to medal at the Euros, so she’ll be looking to do well at the British Championships.
“For the men, you have guys like Chris Baker and Allan Smith who can do well, but I’m not sure they’ll be in medal contention come the Euros.”
The indoor season marks the start of a busy year for athletes, with many looking to build towards the outdoor IAAF World Championships in the Qatari capital of Doha in October.
And while some of the bigger names in world athletics may opt to forgo an indoor season, Grant believes it will stand those who chose to do so in good stead for the months ahead.
“I always found it important to have a good indoor season because it can help you kick on when it came to competing outdoors,” he added.
“I always found that the indoor season was an opportunity for you to see the shape you were in heading into the event.”
“For someone like Morgan to set her new personal best for the high jump already this season at an indoor event is a good sign for the year ahead.”
