Harry Kane netted his 54th goal in an England shirt to break the national team record in their 2-1 win over Italy in Naples to get their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign off to a fine start.

Boss Gareth Southgate made just two changes from the team beaten by France in the World Cup quarter-final as they took on the defending Euro champions, who had beaten them in another shoot-out at Wembley in July 2021.

Manchester City pair Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish came into the starting XI, with the other nine names having all lined up against France in Al Khor.

And Kane once again captained the side, with the Tottenham striker needing just one goal to move clear of Wayne Rooney as England's all-time leading scorer.

Harry Maguire was retained in defence despite being limited to a bit-part at Manchester United while Italy boss Roberto Mancini, with the game being played at Napoli, who Diego Maradona twice led to the Serie A title and the UEFA Cup, handed a debut to Argentina-born striker Mateo Retegui.

Marco Verratti captained the hosts, who were wearing one-off shirts as they played for the first time since the death of former striker and coach Gianluca Vialli, with Arsenal's Jorginho the sole Premier League representative in their starting XI.

England opened the scoring with 13 minutes gone, with West Ham United captain Declan Rice turning the ball home after Kane's shot from a corner into the box had been blocked into his path.

Kane was handed a chance to not only break the record but also put his penalty miss in the World Cup loss to France behind him when England were awarded a penalty.

A VAR check ruled handball against Giovanni Di Lorenzo as referee Srdjan Jovanonic pointed to the spot after checking his pitchside monitor.

The England skipper stepped up and made no mistake, sending Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way to claim an unrivalled 54th England goal.

England should have gone in at the interval further ahead but Grealish managed to miss the target when presented with a near-open goal, which meant the visitors had to settle for a 2-0 half-time lead.

Italy reduced the arrears as Retegui marked his bow with a goal, finishing clinically after being played in by Lorenzo Pellegrini.

And England's task of retaining their lead was made more difficult as Luke Shaw was sent off after picking up two bookings in the space of two minutes - the first for time wasting and the second for fouling Retegui.

The visitors survived the final stages with 10 men to record their first win away over Italy since 1961 and start Group C with three points as the holders crashed to defeat.

England's new record goalscorer Kane admitted a lot of emotions came out after his landmark penalty in Naples.

"Yeah it means everything," he told Channel 4.

"We were so excited to put the England shirt back on and get back out here and get the campaign started for the Euros next year.

"It had to be a penalty of course and once it hit the back of the net it was just so much emotion.

"Just thanks to all the players, the staff, the fans, my wife, my family back home and everyone who has helped me get to this stage. It is just a magical moment.

"Thankfully I put it away and just a great night. We haven't won in Italy for so long. To score and win the game is special.

"The World Cup was obviously a difficult way to end. It was tough to finish it that way.

"We spoke about getting back to it. We feel like we are one of the best teams in Europe and we just need to keep knocking on the door.

"We're getting close but coming here and putting in a performance like that today shows we're ready for the next challenge."

Rooney congratulated the Spurs striker on becoming the nation's all-time leading scorer adding he "knew it wouldn't take long".

Former Manchester United forward Rooney tweeted: "Congratulations to @HKane on becoming @England's all-time leading goalscorer.

"I knew it wouldn't take long but that was quick. Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry."

And former Leicester, Tottenham and Barcelona striker Gary Lineker, who scored 48 times in 80 England appearances, tweeted: "Many congratulations to @HKane on becoming @England's highest ever goal-scorer. A wonderful achievement."
