It was definitely a game of two halves for Plashet Park on Sunday as they matched powerful opponents Poplar right up to the break in their East Ham and District League clash, only to fall away disastrously on the resumption.

All three rinks battled well early on and there were only two shots in it overall as the teams went in for a cup of tea, but the beverage seemed to be rocket fuel for Poplar who stormed clear to take all the rinks in fine style.

Alan Hogwood’s rink of Alf Goring, June Carter and Frank Adams actually came out after the break to win the next two ends and edge in front, but it was shortlived as Janice Fortune and her team of P Beresford, B Mudd and J Burke stepped up a gear.

Claimed

They claimed 13 shots in the next five ends to end any Hogwood hope and they eventually won by 29-16.

It was a similar story for Moosa Patel, Yakub Karim, Dilaver Master and skip Yusef Saeed as they lost four ends on the trot and conceded eight shots on the resumption against J Hansen’s rink of P Burrows, S Dean and R Bancroft. They eventually succumbed 24-15, while the final rink proved to be the closest for Plashet.

A Bashir Patel’s team of Ismail Umarji, Barry Menzies and Cliff Dye started badly, losing seven early ends, but they hit back and by the 11th they were within two shots of W Foley, J McKie, R Pearce and skip T Daden.

It was not to last though as just like the other rinks, they suffered a second-half collapse to eventually lose 20-14 and leave the final score at a whopping 73-45 in Poplar’s favour as they claimed all the points.
