With an early summer following the July heatwave here are some of the activities families can enjoy over the next few weeks.

July 14 - 21

East Village Summer Fete, Victory Parade, Stratford

Saturday, July 14, 11am - 4pm

This year’s East Village Summer Fete is a great fun filled event with music, activities, fairground stalls and attractions as well as lots of food and drink.

There will also be a Wimbledon Ladies’ Final screening and roving acts to keep residents entertained.

Big Butterfly Count, Valence House, Becontree Avenue, Dagenham

July 21, 11am - 3pm

Be part of the world’s biggest butterfly survey and make some beautiful butterfly creations to take home.

Free, drop in, no booking required.

Our Community Festival, Barley Lane Recreation Ground, Ilford

Sunday, July 15, noon - 5pm

Residents can enjoy fairground attractions, community stalls, arts and crafts, circus skills, soft play bus, gamers bus, food stalls and stage performances plus much more from the local community.

Build it! Fun family exhibition about places and spaces in Redbridge, Redbridge Central Library, Ilford

July 19 - September 1, Tuesday - Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 10am - 4pm.

Get active in the building site and drive diggers, lay walls, build bridges and balance the tallest tower block.

Find out why Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford looks the way it does, plan your own town to live in and have a go at designing the city of the future.

Explore Redbridge’s different buildings in the past, present and future through interactive displays, puzzles and games.

The Little Mix Experience, Queen’s Theatre, Billet Lane, Hornchurch

Sunday, July 22, 6pm

Fans of Little Mix will be able to sing and dance along to all their favourite pop hits with the high-energy The Little Mix Experience.

Tickets are £16 and the show is suitable for all ages.

Festival of Code, Wapping High School, Commercial Road, Whitechapel

Monday, July 23 - Friday, July 27, 10am - 4pm.

Children and young people aged from 10 - 18 will be supported by industry mentors to build computer programs, computer games and websites.

There will also be workshops for children to get hands-on experience with new and emerging technology.

Dragonfly workshop and survey training

Tuesday, July 24, 10am - 4.30pm

This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in learning about dragonflies and taking part in surveys.

The morning session will be classroom based but the afternoon session will involve a walk along a stretch of the River Roding, so some physical fitness is required.

Woodland Pond Dipping, Hainault Forest

Monday, August 6, 10am - 11.30am.

Discover what’s living in the lake by the forest. There will be opportunities to dip into an underwater world and make crafty water features to take home.

£3 per child, booking is essential.

Summer at IQL London City, Lego Workshop, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford

Parents are invited to register their children online for the exciting London City Lego workshop with Mini Engineers.

Young and budding architects can rebuild their vision of London City out of Lego.

They’ll have the chance to design, build and enhance their creativity through some interactive hands-on learning as well as enjoying some Lego play with friends.

August 1 - 12

Adventure Sport Tasters, Urban Adventure Base, Tower Hamlets

Monday, July 30 10am - Tuesday, August 28, 4pm

Tower Hamlets Sports Development and Outdoor Education teams are partnering to run five weeks of taster days and courses in Canoeing, Climbing and Mountain Biking.

Please bring a packed lunch and change of clothes, any younger people taking part in mountain biking will need to be reasonably proficient cyclists.

The Gruffalo’s Child, Queen’s Theatre, Billet Lane, Hornchurch

Wednesday August 8 - Saturday, August 11

One of the cuddliest monsters ever takes to the stage, following last year’s sell out run of The Gruffalo.

This magical, musical sequel returns with more songs, laughter and scary fun for children aged 3+ and their grown-ups.

Tickets are £12.50 and there will be a relaxed performance of The Gruffalo’s Child on Thursday, August 9 at 11am.

Best of Music Fest, Walled Garden, Valentines Mansion Gardens, Ilford

Sunday, August 12 and Sunday, September 9, 11.30am - 3.30pm.

Redbridge Music Lounge and Redbridge Green Fair Music Club will once again be running their popular live music sessions in the welcoming atmosphere of the Gardeners Cottage Cafe.

Musicians and jazz singers will be performing a mix of folk and jazz, soft rock, classical, pop and country.

A limited amount of seating will be available but you are welcome to bring your own chairs or picnic blankets.

August 13 - 20

Archaeology Explorer Adventure, Valence House, Becontree Avenue, Dagenham

August 15, 11am - 3pm

Become an archaeologist and discover some ancient treasures as you go behind the scenes in the museum store with this interactive exploration.

Suitable for children aged 7 - 11.

Newham Council’s popular free four-day music spectacular is set to return to East Ham’s Central Park.

Brentwood Borough Council provides an affordable family day out every Friday during the school summer holidays.

Families can enjoy bouncy castles, arts and craft activities, sports as well as other free family-focused fun.

If you can provide a free family activity, your pitch is free.

National Fire Cadets Games, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre

Saturday, August 18 - Sunday, August 19, 10am - 6pm

The London Fire Brigade’s Fire Cadets representing all areas of the UK will be rolling out the hoses, tackling obstacle courses to find out who will be crowned National Fire Cadets Champions.

There will be opportunities for young people to try on fire gear and find out what it takes to be a firefighter. Entry is free.

An annual celebration of London’s Caribbean communities, their culture and traditions, which has been taking place since 1966.

The Havering Show is the borough’s biggest free event and takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
