Youngsters from four schools across Newham have played their own part in the ongoing regeneration of Canning Town.

The children, from Grange Primary in Plaistow, and Rokeby School, St Luke’s Primary School and Star Primary School unveiled their ‘Imaginings of Canning Town’ artwork at the event at Rokeby.

They designed and created sculptures and models out of plasticine and clay in six weeks under the guidance of experts from the Rosetta Art Centre in Stratford.

Sanaz Amidi, head of the Rosetta Art Centre, said: “The aim of this project was to bring children together and encourage them to share and exchange ideas about their environment in a fun and creative way.

“It’s an opportunity for the children to build their personal, social and cultural skills as they generate ideas based on what they have learnt about their surroundings.”

Robert Headley, Rokeby technology teacher, added: “The value of this project to the students cannot be put into words

“It has vastly improved their creative and social skills and they are so much more confident in their achievements.

“We’ve had great feedback from students and parents and the students would like to continue to have closer contact with the community.”

The programme was sponsored by John Sisk & Son, Newham Council’s main contractor for the Canning Town regeneration project.
