Young post boys and girls helped bring together an end of summer street party celebrating the borough’s 50th birthday.

Helpful children delivered letters and informed residents of the event, which was organised by community education and development project Skills Rethink, and took place in Studley Road, Forest Gate, on August 29.

Hundreds of residents attended the free event as children were able to enjoy a number of activities including face-painting and a bouncy castle slide.

Organiser and director of Skills Rethink, Shagufta Nasreen, said: “Children thoroughly enjoyed the bouncy castle slide, hennah and face painting, along with cake decorations and candyfloss to add to their fun on the day.

She added: “Children really enjoyed various street games, such as basketball and football that was very popular with the young ones, also they rode their bikes on the street and enjoyed their freedom to be on the road without being worried about the traffic.”

Local councillors including Winston Vaughan and Hanif Abdulmuhit attended the event and a cake was also cut to mark the occasion.

Mrs Nasreen also explained that families later requested that the project organise further street parties and that some residents had even offered to help in bringing together the next event.
