Completing a triathlon is tough at any age, but when you’re just eight years old, it can be incredibly challenging.

For the 1,000 youngsters taking on the Tata Kids of Steel triathlon in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, though, running, cycling and swimming in the footsteps of their sporting heroes inspired them to reach the finish line.

The competitors, all aged between eight and 13, fist swam 75 metres in the London Aquatics Centre before completing an 800 metre cycle ride and a 1,200 metre run.

British Triathlon Trust ambassador Adam Bowden said: “I have been competing in triathlon since 2009 and have seen the popularity of the sport rise every year.

“London is a city full of triathlon history after the London 2012 Olympic Games and to celebrate the Olympic triathlon legacy by giving future generations the opportunity to try this sport at such an iconic venue, is another landmark moment in my home city.”

The Tata Kids of Steel series launched in 2007 and allows children around the country to take part in a mini triathlon in a safe environment.

It is the first time an event has been held in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with a number of schools in Newham taking part in the challenge.
