If you thought there was only one world cup final this month, think again.

More than 300 young people gathered at Stratford Circus to cheer on pupils competing in the final of the Spoke poetry slam world cup 2014.

The event, commissioned by Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, involved ten schools from the five Olympic boroughs and has seen more than 1,000 young people work with some renowned London-based poets over the past year.

The judging panel, including the young poet laureate for London Warsan Shire, said they were “blown away” by the quality of the entries.

Clapton Girls’ School, Hackney, picked up the award for the most striking line in a poem for the phrase “we dream of love and we love our dream”.

The Most Humorous Line Award went to Lammas School, Waltham Forest, while the highest-scoring team was St Paul’s School, Greenwich.

Applications are now to become the new young poet laureate for London, closing at midday, August 19. The winner will be announced on October 2. Visit spoke.org.uk for more.
