A group of young carers from across the borough came together last week to take part in an artistic workshop.

Altogether, 11 young carers, aged between eight and 15, attended a charity project in London Road, Plaistow.

The event, organised by Create, a charity which works with vulnerable young people throughout the UK, encouraged youngsters who care for sick parents and relatives, to take time out of their busy schedules to attend the event.

On the day youngsters were able to work with a professional artist and produced their own art work.

One 15-year-old youngster, who cares for her epileptic father and autistic brother, said she really “enjoyed the workshop”.

She added: “They have taught me how to work in a team, share my ideas and feel more confident.

“Normally I am a shy person but once I knew my group I could share my ideas and stuff. Once I got to know everyone I was quite loud!

“I made new friends, too: I didn’t know anyone at the start, apart from my brother and one friend I have from school. I like everyone in the group.

“I haven’t done anything like this before but now I will be able to give ideas to other people that don’t know about this and say it’s a fun thing to do.

“I would be interested in doing it again. I am really looking forward to showing my parents what I’ve made. They will feel amazed and proud.”

Lydia Burke, Project Manager at Create Arts, added: “Young carers don’t usually get a lot of time to think about themselves so it was an opportunity for them to enjoy themselves by doing something productive and fun.”
