A young builder had a lucky escape this morning after he fell backwards through a gap in a floor with no staircase and into a cellar, according to firefighters.

Firefighters from Plaistow fire station used a ladder and stretcher to reach the 25-year-old man and get him out of the cellar of the terraced Victorian house on Barking Road, near the junction with New Barn Street, Canning Town.

Crew manager David Wakefield said: “He was conscious but not able to move and clearly in a lot of pain.”

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance said they took the patient to the trauma centre at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel after being called just before 8am.

She said: “We were called to reports of a 25-year-old man with pelvic and back pain. He was conscious and able to breath, and had no obvious injuries.”
