Woolwich Ferry shut due to ‘man in river’

The Woolwich Ferry was closed this afternoon as the London Ambulance Service and police were called to the scene.

The ferry, which carries passengers across the Thames from Woolwich on the south bank to North Woolwich, was shut down when a man was spotted in the cold river.

London Ambulance Service were called at 1.18pm to New Ferry Approach and sent an ambulance crew, a single responder in a car, an incident response officer and the Hazardous Area Response Team.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said they were called “for assistance for a man who was in the Thames.

“He has been removed safely.”

London Ambulance Service confirmed that they treated a man at the scene, who was taken to a south London hospital.

The ferry was reopened at 2.10pm.
