A woman was led to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus after flames broke out at a Plaistow flat.

Fire crews were called to the block of flats in Queen’s Road West after a fire began at 11.21pm on Saturday.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters battled the blaze on the 12th floor, which damaged part of the property.

The woman was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service and a further 20 people escaped the building before the Brigade arrived.

Crews from Plaistow, Stratford, East Ham and Leytonstone fire stations attended and took about an hour to control the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
