A woman was rescued from the water in Royal Victoria Dock late last night.

Emergency services including a police helicopter and ambulance crews were alerted when she was spotted in the huge east London former docks.

A police helicopter using a searchlight joined land based police and ambulance crew to find the woman who was recovered from the water and taken to Newham General Hospital just after 11pm.

An eyewitness told the Recorder that the helicopter searched for quite some time watched by crowds of local residents and guests staying at the nearby Ibis Hotel.

He said that after the woman was rescued, the police search continued for some time in case other people in the water.
