A woman was taken to hospital after being rescued from a fire in Forest Gate last night.

Firefighters were called to a block of flats on Post Office Approach just after 6pm and the fire was brought under control at about 7pm.

A woman in her early twenties was rescued from the first floor via a short extension ladder and was taken to hospital in an ambulance after suffering from smoke inhalation.

A total of four fire engines and 21 firefighters from Stratford, Plaistow, Leytonstone and East Ham fire stations attended the scene.

Fire damaged part of a five-roomed flat on the first floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
