More than 200 well wishers of all ages, faiths and backgrounds united for a parish birthday celebration.
A range of free “quiet activities and boisterous games” marked the 121st anniversary of St Matthew’s Church in Dyson Road, West Ham, on Saturday.
Excited children were enthralled by a bubble-making machine before getting hands on for hair plaiting, badge making and face painting.
Adults could enjoy a massage, salsa dancing or receive a health awareness talk on blood pressure from health professionals.
Rev Christiana Asinugo said it was a happy occasion, adding: “Everyone we spoke to said ‘what a wonderful day’.”
West Ham MP Lyn Brown and Forest Gate South Cllr Winston Vaughan also attended as did a varied cross-section of locals which Rev Asinugo said made the day a “proper community event”
She said: “We live in a very diverse area but diversity should not stop us mixing with one another and reaching out to people. It was inspiring.”
