Victims of domestic abuse have been remembered at a candlelight vigil.
The event, which was held at NewVIc on Wednesday after the previously planned Stratford event was rained off two days earlier, was organised as part of the United Nations’ 16 days of activism, which aims to raise awareness of violence against women and girls.
Cllr Lakmini Shah, cabinet member for work and skills and domestic violence, led a minute’s silence to remember those who lost their lives, while the Prince Regent Lane, Plaistow college’s principal Eddie Playfair spoke about the need to keep raising awareness of domestic and sexual violence.
Attendees also heard from a victim of domestic violence who shared her experience.
It was one of several events organised by Newham Council during the 16 day campaign. Figures show that in Newham, three out of four victims of domestic violence are women, as nine in ten victims of sexual assault.
