Olympic regeneration showcased in 107 seconds in a time-lapse video has won an award after going viral.

The Game On clip, released before the Olympic and Paralympic Games last year, was viewed more than 50,000 times in a fortnight and topped the Guardian viral chart.

The video, made by Newham Council, won a Digital Excellence Award from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).

A web camera was mounted on top of a tower block in Stratford in 2003 and the footage is a condensed version of nine years of regeneration.

The council said they did not allocate a budget for the video but used their existing new media team, only incurring a £30 cost for the soundtrack - ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov bought from a website called Shockwave Sound.

A spokesperson for CIPR said: “The sheer volume of views of the film online were testament to the impact it had. Clear evaluation and a cracking but simple creative idea made this entry stand out from the pack.”

Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “The award recognises the hard work of the council in capturing people’s attention around the Games, getting people excited about the biggest sporting event in the world and promoting Newham to worldwide audience.”
