The Upton Centre has been declared as an Asset of Community Value.

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for West Ham, Festus Akinbusoye, applied to have the community centre, in Claude Road, registered as an Asset of Community Value, after it was suddenly closed to the public last December.

He said he was “delighted that the application had been successful”.

He added: “I remain very unsatisfied with the manner user groups have been treated in regards to the closure of the Upton Centre, but this at least assures us that the future of the Centre for community use only is secure.”

The successful application means that local community users would be given time to come up with a bid for the asset if it was to be sold.

A Newham Council spokeswoman confirmed that the Upton Centre has been listed as an Asset of Community Value and that it will be taken into consideration when a decision is made on the centre’s future.

A consultation on the future of the Centre is due to start this month.
