Upton Centre demolition application submitted

Demolition notices have been placed outside the Upton Centre, weeks after councillors decided to permanently close the popular venue.
The Claude Road site was shut in December after the boilers were found to no longer be compliant with legislation.
Following a public consultation, the decision was taken to permanently close the centre with a view to redeveloping it.
A Newham Council spokeswoman confirmed that an application was submitted to the planning department.
She said: “As part of the redevelopment of this site the existing centre, a Victorian school building and outbuildings, will need to be demolished.
“The application will be considered by officers by Thursday, September 24 and the council will then have a maximum period of five years in which to carry out the demolition.”
An outline development plan for the site is expected to be submitted by the end of the year.
