A derelict site could provide much-needed temporary housing if plans to turn it into a 15-bed hostel are approved.

Developers The Bellcourt Group hope that the vacant building, comprising 206 and 208 on the eastern side of High Street North, East Ham, will cater for students or other tenants.

The new development will combine 15 bedroom units with communal living facilities on the first and second floors, plus the rear of the ground floor.

These will include a kitchen, lounge and laundry amenities plus access to cycle and refuse facilities.

It is proposed that the front section of the ground floor remains in its current form as a shop and restaurant.

The hostel was planned as far back as 2001, however the application was not granted at the time of submission, even though the interior was converted in preparation.

In a bid to secure the new application, the developers, working with ADA Architects Ltd, have plans to remodel the interior and to slightly extend the living space on the ground floor.

The application has been submitted by Joseph Teitelbaum of The Bellcourt Group.
