Gerard Batten, MEP for London, has had a brick thrown through the window of his Forest Gate home.

The MEP, who is standing again as a candidate for next week’s elections, confirmed that the item was thrown in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He said: “My wife and I were woken at 3:30am by a noise downstairs.

“On investigating we could see nothing out of place and went back to bed, assuming the noise had been caused by a household pet.

“We were woken 45 minutes later by a much louder noise, accompanied by the sound of breaking glass.

“On rushing downstairs, we discovered that a house brick had been thrown through our living room window.”

Mr Batten added that it was the latest in a series of attempts to intimidate the party in recent months.

He said: “We have seen Ukip premises vandalised, billboards destroyed and elected representatives, campaigners and activists targeted with physical and verbal abuse.

“Many if not all of these attacks appear to have been driven by the hard left and their allies operating under the guise of ‘anti-racism’.”

Mr Batten, 60, was a founder member of the party in 1993, and was first elected as an MEP in 2004.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage has responded to the incident on his Twitter account.

He said: “I’ve just heard the disgraceful news that my colleague Gerard Batten MEP’s house was attacked with bricks

“The attack on [his] house is a direct consequence of the media campaign against Ukip.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that police were called at 04:15 on Tuesday, May 13 to a report of criminal damage at the Sidney Road property.

Nobody was injured and their enquiries continue.
