A University of East London student is appealing for help in crowdfunding her PhD.

Tomi Kassim, who is also a visiting lecturer at the university, hopes that her work will provide a reference source for future UEL performing art students.

She is attempting to raise money to fund her PhD, looking at the cultural, political and social constructs of urban identity, in dance and theatre performance.

She said: “I originally applied for one of the 20 PhD studentships awarded by the University of East London this year.

“I was unsuccessful even though I taught there, but my PhD proposal was approved and I have been assigned three intrigued supervisors when most people usually get one.

“Colleagues in the field of performance are excited about my research and cannot wait for it to unfold.”

Tomi, who has lived in Newham for seven years, said that she hopes to address the deficit in academic writing about visual and performance art through her studies.
