UEFA -the governing body behind one of the world’s most prestigious football competitions -is bringing a family festival to the Olympic site.

The festival running from May 23 to 26 will coincide with the UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium on May 25.

UEFA announced last week that the free four-day football celebration, featuring a series of family-friendly activities, will be the first major event to come to the home of the London Games since last summer.

The climax to the festival will be the Ultimate Champions Match which will see UEFA football legends playing against each other. The ambassador of the match is retired English footballer Steven McManaman.

The event will take place at The International Quarter in Stratford City, close to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “It will provide a fantastic week-long family event and will revive the spirit of community and celebration that made last year’s Olympic Games so special.”

TIQ, an entirely new commercial district, is the final piece of Stratford City, providing four million sq ft of new workplace expected to create 25,000 jobs. The quarter overlooks the Aquatics Centre and Olympic Stadium. Managing Director of Development for Lend Lease, overseeing the district, Mark Dickinson, said: “We are looking to attract early investment in the form of exhibitions and events, and are keen to work with organisations to ensure benefits from these events spread beyond their boundaries to the local schools and communities in the surrounding areas”.

The event aims to include local schools and the community.
