Firefighters have attended two blazes that broke out within an hour of each other.

Officers were called to sheltered accommodation on Berkeley Road, Manor Park, at around 7.20pm on Friday.

The fire was confined to a bed, with heavy smoke in the bedroom.

Crews in breathing apparatus from East Ham and Stratford stations rescued two people who were both uninjured.

A second call was made at around 8.10pm the same day to a house on Marlow Road, East Ham, where the whole of the ground floor, first floor and loft conversion were gutted by fire.

Two adults and five children left the property before crews from Barking, Poplar and Ilford stations arrived, with a woman and a boy treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The cause of both fires, which are not related, is currently under investigation.
