Theatre Royal Straford East are looking for 30 people to host bespoke, one-man plays in their living room in an ambitious project called Home Theatre.

The aim is to bring the noble art of treading the boards to people who aren’t regular theatre-goers. Applications from interested Londoners will be accepted until Friday, August 21.

In the week leading up to the performance, each artist will take inspiration from their host before performing to them and an audience of their friends and family on Saturday, October 17.

Home Theatre first took pace in 2013. This year it is being funded by The Gulbenkian Foundation and The Gibbs Charitable Trust and is once again being produced by Theatre Royal Stratford East in partnership with Festival Internacional de Cenas em Casa.

Kerry Michael, Theatre Royal’s artistic director, said Home Theatre was “all about opening up theatre to new audiences in innovative ways”.

He added: “We are proud to be leading the global Home Theatre movement, as more performances are being created in this way in Brazil and South Africa, as well as closer to home in Birmingham.”

Performance artist Suhaiyla Hippolyte, who staged one of the performances in 2013, said: “Home Theatre was one the most intense weeks of my life.

“Making a show in just a few days for someone that I didn’t know was daunting but at the same time really pushed me as an artist. Performing in an intimate place like someone’s home was a new and very rewarding experience.”

All 30 performances will be broadcast on stratfordeast.com on Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1.

Members of the public wishing to take part can find out how to apply by visiting stratfordeast.com/hometheatre or emailing hometheatreuk@stratfordeast.com to request an application form.
