The Emirates Air Line will be carrying a very special passenger on Sunday – the Webb Ellis Cup.

The trophy, which will be handed to the winners of the Rugby World Cup on October 31, will arrive in the borough accompanied by former England World Cup winner Jason Leonard and official anthem singer Laura Wright.

The trophy will be visiting the borough as part of a 100-day nationwide tour and spend two days in Newham.

Sunday’s welcome will see children from Gallions, St Luke’s and Keir Hardie primary schools join members of West Ham United’s community trust and the Deputy Mayor of Newham, Cllr Lester Hudson, on the dockside.

From there it will move to Memorial Park, where East London RFC are hosting a community event from noon, with the chance to pose with the trophy between 3pm and 6pm.

On Monday it will visit the Boleyn Ground’s learning zone, the army reserve centre in West Ham and the Olympic Stadium, which will host five World Cup matches.

Cllr Hudson said: “We have already shown during the 2012 Games that we know how to create a festival atmosphere and we look forward once again to welcoming the world to Newham.”

Danny Price, head of Emirates Air Line, added: “It’s an honour to help transport such an important icon of one of the world’s greatest sporting events in the Webb Ellis Trophy as it travels to London’s highest observational point above the River Thames.”
