TRADERS are being warned they could face a fine of up to £5,000 if they sell cosmetics containing the banned substance hydroquinone.

The warning comes after Newham Council's trading standards officers caught two retailers in the borough selling the unsafe products.

Officers seized the facial creams containing the banned substance, which can cause cancer, liver damage and other illness, and are investigating the matter further with a view to prosecute the trader.

Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent which is often used in skin lightening products. Since 2001, it has been illegal for the substance to be available in cosmetic products that are sold over the counter.
