Disadvantaged youngsters across Newham will be able to celebrate this Christmas thanks to the Community Links and Newham Recorder Christmas Toy Appeal.
Set up more than 30 years ago by the Recorder’s editor at the time, Colin Grainger, the annual appeal has put a smile on the face of thousands of children.
This year will see fundraising events take place across the borough, with businesses and individuals contributing presents to help fill the empty room at Community Links’ base in Barking Road, Canning Town.
The first donation of gifts has already come in thanks to the London Lions.
The basketball team, based at the Copper Box in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, helped to launch this year’s appeal by pledging their support.
On behalf of the squad, marketing director Lolly Marlborough said: “We are so pleased to be able to help with the annual Christmas Toy Appeal in conjunction with Community Links.
“We will be giving free basketball tickets to all the children this Christmas when they receive their presents from the community.”
A quiz night, motorcycle fun run and a Christmas lunch are all set to take place over the following weeks, while there is also the chance to take part in a sponsored trivia quiz to help raise funds to purchase even more presents.
Newham Recorder editor Michael Adkins said: “The Community Links Toy Appeal, supported by the Recorder, is a fantastic campaign and grows in strength and support every year.
“You can really make a difference by donating a toy, big or small, at one of the drop off points.
“I hope residents in Newham will look into their hearts and support this excellent cause so that no children go without presents this Christmas.”
Community Links has been helping disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the borough for more than 40 years.
Its work includes running youth clubs, providing advice on housing and debt and supporting the unemployed.
