Members of community charity Deafroots gathered at Stratford Town Hall last Thursday to recognise the achievements of volunteers, staff and beneficiaries.

The Newham organisation has been supporting the deaf community in east London for 13 years.

Through their work a large number of hearing impaired people have faced improved employment prospects and greater independence.

Deafroots mainly survives through the Big Lottery Fund and donations and it has grown significantly in the past few years.

Chairwoman Sangeeta Sengupta presented special awards to volunteers Sylvia Charge, Josianne Germaine and staff member Shazia Bashir-Masood.

Event organiser, Angel Joseph said: “I was really thrilled and really proud to be part of that event.

“I would not able to pull together this event without the support from Sangeeta Sengupta and our fantastic team within Deafroots.

“I feel very passionate about working in an organisation like Deaf Roots because it has enriched the lives of these deaf and hard of hearing customers.”

Cllrs Debbia Thiara, Neil Wilson and Motin Uz- Zaman were also in attendence to give their support.

Debbie Thiara said: “It’s truly a privilege and an honour to be here today to celebrate the successes of Deafroots , particularly their trainees, volunteers and staff.”

Angel said the group is open to anyone who would like to join. For more information on the charity call 020 8534 7111
