One of east London’s most famous daughters, Dame Vera Lynn celebrates her 100th birthday today.

The singer who was to become known as the forces’ sweetheart was born Vera Welch on March 20, 1917, to parents Bertram and Annie.

Our timeline, sponsored by Eastland Meadows Country Park, tells the story of how a little girl who started performing at the age of seven went on to become one of the country’s best-loved singers.
