But we don’t simply have to watch from the sidelines.

If seeing the Rugby World Cup come to Stratford has stirred up a desire in you to scrum down and get muddy, then read on.

Inspired by the international event that has brought nations from around the world to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park once again, the Recorder has sought out the top spots to play rugby in the borough and speaks to someone who knows the game inside out.

Thoughts on rugby usually turn to injuries, but the sport has many benefits as Michael Wheeler, chairman of the Newham Dockers rugby club, tells us.

“The obvious ones are enjoyment and a physical and mental challenge, but also things such as fitness and the chance to make new friends and play in a team environment.

“Rugby also teaches you a great deal of discipline and respect.”

Newham Dockers are a rugby league club – as opposed to the more popular union code being played at the world cup – based between West Ham and Plaistow.

They play in the London League and operate both a juniors section and an open age men’s section.

The club has been around since 2012 and won the league in 2013.

Michael says they are always inclusive and keen to welcome new players, even working with junior players aged under 10.

“Newham Dockers really prides itself on being a welcoming and inclusive club,” the chairman, 40, said.

“Players of all levels are welcome. All the boys who play here are a good bunch and like to enjoy themselves when playing. It’s a really fun environment to be in.”

Michael first got into rugby by watching it on TV as a child. He said the “great Wigan team of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s” switched him on to the sport, adding: “I gracefully retired a few years ago, but played for a number of years and loved every minute.

“It’s a great sport to be apart of it and I’d encourage anyone to join.

“I think a few of the boys have taken in some of the world cup games on TV, and it’s great to see big sporting events coming to Newham.

“We’re extra lucky that we get to see England play New Zealand in a three test [rugby league] series in November, with the second test match being played at the Olympic stadium.”
