A NEWHAM Council employee who swindled benefits has been branded "despicable".

Stella Adedigba, 44, a midday supervisor at John F Kennedy School in Stratford, claimed the money while earning rental income from two properties.

She was given an eight-week jail sentence suspended for a year when she appeared at Stratford Magistrates' Court.

She was also placed under a supervision order for six months and must pay £1,000 court costs. Her work position is being dealt with under the council's usual disciplinary procedures.

The court heard the Town Hall began an investigation following an anonymous tip-off. It was discovered Adedigba was sub-letting her council tenancy in Tollgate Road, Custom House, while she lived in a property she owned in Cumberland Road, Plaistow.

It was also discovered she owned another property in Ling Road, Canning Town, which she was also renting out. She had not declared this property when she applied for council housing.
