A Newham councillor has spoken of her shock and delight in being elected onto the Fabian Women’s Network Executive Committee.

Seyi Akiwowo was named a board member of the 2000-strong female section of the leading left-wing think tank yesterday following an earlier voting process.

The West Ham Labour Women’s Officer will be in post for two years although her exact position is yet to be determined.

She said: “I’m extremely grateful to everyone that voted for me. I’m super excited to join an incredible team of women and support the great work of Fabian Women’s Network.”

Launched in 2005, the organisation runs a female mentoring scheme, public speaking club and magazine among its initiatives.

Seyi added: “Like many women’s sections it about having a dedicated and safe space for women to share ideas, expertise and connect.

“For me this is extremely important, particularly if we want to see gender parity in politics and among policy-makers.”
