A Stratford theatre has been awarded nearly 20,000 by the Evening Standard to run a project to promote the health and wellbeing of Newham’s over-60s.

The IROKO Theatre Company, which is based in Mark Street, was given 19,833 by the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund to run its ‘Forgotten Folks’ project.

The funding, part of a 1 million grant recently distributed to charities by the Evening Standard will enable IROKO to offer free music-making, gentle movement and arts and craft workshops for older people in Newham. The Prime Minister, David Cameron said “I am delighted that another 1 million is being distributed to great charities that will transform the lives of more people.”

Alex Oma-Pius, Chief Executive of IROKO, said: “These activities will be the perfect opportunity for our Over 60’s to meet new people and take part in stimulating art activities while having fun at the same time”.

The workshops will take place in various venues around the borough until June 2013. To find out more about The Forgotten Folks project, contact the theatre at www.irokotheatre.org.uk; info@irokotheatre.org.uk; or call 020 592 1992.
