Door Ajar Theatre’s Thisbe tells the story of the daughter of two characters from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Helena and Demetrius.
It is set years later after the loved up couple have married and are bringing up their teenaged daughter, Thisbe, played by Rosalind Burt, who appears to be “going through a phase”.
Jealous of the attention Demetrius lavishes upon Helena, Thisbe tries to drive a wedge between them by entering a forbidden wood where she meets Puck, played by Joey Hickman, who offers her a flower the nectar of which casts a spell on her dad.
As a result of Thisbe’s shenanigans, Demetrius falls out of love with Helena, and promptly vanishes.
Regretting her actions, a panicked Thisbe goes in search of her father in an attempt to get her parents back together.
Directed by Roberta Zuric, Thisbe, which runs until Saturday at Gerry’s Stratford East, is an ideal one for the kids.
It’s not quite Shakespeare, but it’s warm, friendly and with a message which would resonate well among youngsters.
