The striking cycling Velodrome - a centre piece in Stratford’s Olympic Park - has won a prestigious architecture award for its environmentally friendly design.

Use of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council on the track and external cladding and the installation of a 100 per cent natural ventilation system, where the building’s shape itself allows fresh air to circulate, helped it scoop the Prime Minister’s Better Public Award – beating 60 other entries - at a ceremony in London.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chair John Armitt said: “The Velodrome was the first venue to be announced as structurally complete on the Olympic Park and it has quickly become a symbol of smart and sustainable design that demonstrates the best of British talent.”
