An event which aims to support people affected by mental health illnesses will be launched in Stratford next month.

Newham Council, working with its partners, will be opening the Active Minds Café at Stratford Library on June 11.

The cafe is designed to be an informal setting place where residents affected by mental health difficulties, their family and carers can get together and have a tea and talk about their experiences. It will take place every three months at different venues around the borough.

With one in four people in the UK affected by a mental illness (including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar and dementia) and an estimated 34,000 adults in Newham with a mental health problem, the event will help residents to challenge and break down barriers and stigma associated with mental health.

The first Active Minds Cafe will take place at Stratford Library on June 11 in The Grove from 10.30 am until 12noon. Those attending will have the chance to see aspects from Bobby Baker’s daily drawing art exhibition around mental health, learn how to take control of their mental health by changing what they eat, try free smoothies, keep active with yoga and ping pong, get a hand and head massage and learn more about breaking down the stigma attached to mental health through Talking Therapies and a Pop Up Cinema.

There will also be information on where to access local advice, support, and knowledge about mental recovery and wellness. Residents will also have the chance to listen to people affected by mental health difficulties, find out how healthy eating and keeping active can support health and wellbeing.

The project brings together partners including Mind, Hibiscus Community Centre, Active Newham, Newham Adult Learning, Holden Point Sheltered Accommodation, ASK Bobby Bakers Arts, Community Mental Health Team and Big White Wall.
