Two hundred people packed into a popular pub on Sunday to support a barman who is running the London Marathon to raise funds for a children's cancer charity.

Wesley Green transformed The Goose in Broadway into a 70s and 80s party venue at the weekend, with punters dressed in wigs, glasses and quirky trousers.

The event at the Stratford pub was part of Wesley’s sponsorship drive to raise funds for Children with Cancer UK.

The barman and event organiser, 37, who dressed as a 80s rock star on the night, hopes to raise £1,500 from donations and by hosting two events.

“There was a good crowd and a really great atmosphere at the event. All of the customers got into the spirit,” Wesley said.

“We haven’t counted the takings yet but we hope to have raised £500 from this event which will go towards my total fundraising target,” he added.

Money was raised on the night by selling raffle tickets and glow sticks and by staging a collection. Prizes included football memorabilia signed by Sir Bobby Moore and Thierry Henry, which were donated by one of the pub’s regulars.

Wesley’s final event, a St George’s Day party at The Goose, will be held on April 23 – just three days before the marathon on April 26.

Wesley, who also ran the London Marathon in 2005, said: “I want the day to come but when it does, I’ll be dreading it. Last time, I was in so much pain when I finished. I sat down and couldn’t get back up again – I had to stay there for quite a while.

“Fingers crossed it won’t be as bad this time as I’ve been putting a lot of effort into my training.”

Children with Cancer UK aims to determine the causes, find cures and provide care for children with cancer.
