One of the first women to be ordained an Anglican priest will join her fellow pioneers for a special church service nearly two decades after the historic event.
Rev Jeanette Meadway has been a priest in Newham since she was ordained in 1994, first at St John’s Church, and since 1997 at St James Church in St James Road, Stratford.
More than 700 women priests from across the country will flock to St Paul’s Cathedral on May 3, many marching from Westminster Cathedral, to mark the 20 year anniversary of their ordination.
Speaking to the Recorder, Rev Jeanette reflected on the day she became one of the country’s first women priests.
She said: “There were a whole group of us. It was a wonderful feeling.
“It’s a great privilege to be ordained as a priest. It’s a great feeling that the church accepts the calling and accepted us as priests.”
Rev Jeanette, a regular reader of the Recorder, said she was also one of the first women to be ordained alongside the men with whom she had been a deacon.
