Donors who normally go to Stratford to give blood will have to forego their sessions during the Olympics.

A spokeswoman for the NHS Blood Transfusion said: “This was due to the lack of availability at the Stratford Old Town Hall and the disruptions that the Olympic Games are expected to cause.

“We were also advised by TFL to avoid the Newham area. We need to collect blood and return it to our base for processing in a certain amount of time and therefore need to avoid getting stuck in traffic.”

The service is still however appealing to promote blood donation in the Newham community to either encourage new donors to enrol. They will be invited to a donor session in Stratford when the service returns in October or to make an appointment at an alternative venue.

Donors can visit www.blood.co.uk or call the helpline on 0300 123 23 23 to gain details of sessions held in other London Boroughs. They will be hosting all City sessions on weekdays from July 24 to August 9 at its temporary Olympic centre at Brewers Hall, Aldermanbury Square, London.
