That’s in America at least, where Black Friday first originated. But it’s not only our cousins across the pond who can profit from the huge discounts offered by retailers over a limited few days.

Today, stores across Newham and the wider country will slash prices on selected items and offer shoppers the chance to make massive savings just as they pick up their final pay packet in the run up to Christmas.

Last year, mall giants Westfield saw footfall numbers reach close to a quarter of a million shoppers at its two London centres in Stratford and Shepherds Bush.

This weekend it is expecting 600 of its retailers to mark Black Friday with special offers. Shops in Straford Shopping Centre and East Ham High Street have also put up sale posters.

Westfield director Myf Ryan said: “The US phenomenon of Black Friday is becoming a fixed mark on the UK Christmas calendar for both shoppers and retailers.

“Last year’s Black Friday saw footfall numbers at Westfield centres reach close to a quarter of a million shoppers.

“Black Friday kicks off Westfield’s shopping weekend with retailers offering discounts throughout the entire weekend. Last year Westfield achieved its biggest shopping days of the year on the Black Friday weekend.”

Discounts at the Stratford City mega mall will include up to 25% per cent off at Adidas, 20pc off at Bershka and 25pc off at Karen Millen.
