East Ham MP Stephen Timms has landed a place on a key committee to oversee Britain’s leaving of the European Union.
The Labour politician, a staunch Remain campaigner, said he was “delighted” to be elected to the Exiting the EU Select Committee, which has its first meeting today.
It will have responsibility for scrutinising and quizing Cabinet ministers responsible for overseeing the UK’s departure from the EU and the triggering of Article 50 next year.
Mr Timms, who was chosen by his fellow Labour party MPs, said: “The committee‘s task is to scrutinise the government’s plans.
“I expect us to look initially at what the government should be aiming for from the forthcoming negotiations.
“Top of my list of concerns is future employment, not least in our part of London.”
There are 19 members of the committee including prominent Brexiter Michael Gove. Hilary Benn has been appointed as its chair.
