An advisor to the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry will be speaking at the Stratford campus of the University of East London tomorrow.

Dr Richard Stone OBE will be posing the question: What progress do you think has been made since the publication 14 years ago of the report into the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry?

Dr Stone was an advisor to the judge Sir William Macpherson who led the public inquiry into the death of the black teenager Stephen Lawrence, murdered in 1993 in a racist attack while waiting for a bus in south London.

The inquiry was ordered by the then Home Secretary Jack Straw in July 1997 and finished with the publication of Sir Macpherson’s report in February 1999. During this time the panel visited six inner city areas, including East London.

Dr Stone’s visit to UEL is the third in a series of return visits to these locations. He will be speaking at the Stratford campus on Wednesday 6 November, 5.30pm – 8.30pm, and will discuss the impacts and outcomes of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry in relation to local communities.

Dr Stone said: “We visited East London with the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry in 1998, and now we are coming back to hear if people think things have changed, or not as the case may be, since the Inquiry ended.

“The event will give us the opportunity to hear from five community leaders from the area who were involved in the Inquiry. I will be reading from my book Hidden Stories, which will form the basis of the discussion into whether progress has been made.”

His book Hidden Stories of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry was published in March 2013.

Doreen Lawrence OBE, mother of Stephen Lawrence, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Education from UEL in 2012, recognising her tireless campaigns following his death. Her campaign for justice brought about reforms in the criminal justice system, and shone attention on institutional racism in the police service. In July 2013, it was announced that Doreen was to be made a Labour life peer in recognition of her charity work, and she was created Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon.
