A near-fatal stabbing of a man following a violent robbery has led police to call for anyone with information to come forward.

The victim was stabbed while walking home along Jake Russell Walk in Beckton at 7pm on Tuesday, July 29, by a stranger who was trying to rob him.

He was approached by the suspect, who demanded some of his property, and was stabbed in his left leg, causing a near-fatal wound.

The victim, 33, a husband and father of a 14-month-old girl, underwent emergency surgery and is now expected to make a full recovery.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the attack or seen the suspect.

The suspect is described as a stocky black male aged 25 to 30-years-old, around 5ft 8ins with a dense moustache and goatee beard.

He rode a black mountain bike which is believed to be either too small for the rider or with the seat low down.

The suspect is thought to have fled towards Victoria Dock Road or past allotments on to Royal Road, which leads to Bering Walk and Baxter Road.

The victim’s brown Adidas bag with tan-coloured piping around the edges has not been recovered.

Anyone with any information should contact Detective Constable Katie Bennett from Newham CID on 0208 217 5402/5085, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
