The distinctive red and white flag of St George will be flying in Newham every day England play in the World Cup to support the team in Brazil.

The World Cup starts on June 12 and the England team will play its first match against Italy on June 14. The borough’s residents can expect to see the St George’s Cross flown at both the Old Town Hall Stratford and East Ham Town Hall every time England play.

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham said: “As one of the most diverse places in the world, our residents have connections to every continent but they all call England home. That’s why during the World Cup, we’ll be flying the St George’s flag every time the England team plays.

Newham residents can also celebrate the World Cup by hosting their own community event and inviting their neighbours. Newham Council is offering support for funding through Let’s Get the Party Started grants of £250 and up to £500 awarded in exceptional circumstances.
